Which food items should be avoided when on homeopathic medicines?

Most people that come to me for homeopathic treatment often ask me, "Doctor, why don't you tell us not to eat onion or garlic when on medication?" "Why don't you ask us to abstain from coffee?" Most of the times my answer is same. Homeopathic medicines are far more potent than we think, when chosen wisely. One need not avoid all this stuff altogether unless a certain medicine demands for such an abstinence.

For the effect of the medicine to be optimal, one should avoid any strong smelling substance 15-20 minutes before and after taking the medicine. This includes not only onion, garlic and coffee but also the use of toothpaste, perfume, mouthwash, etc. Being very minute dose of medicine, such strong smell may sabotage its action. However, total avoidance is not warranted.
